Recently the Regional Clinical Hospital celebrated its 200th anniversary. The jubilee was an excellent occasion to take an interview from Head Physician Vladimir Porkhanov, a symbolic figure for the Kuban medicine.

“For the last 6 years, we have performed around 700 transplant operations. I think that about 20% cases were patients from beyond our region. As a matter of fact, we are not authorized to perform such operations on non-residents of the Krasnodar region. That is why our patients come here and get registered their residence in our region. They get the ‘registration’ and at the same time a lawful right for the operation.

I believe, it’s high time our hospital was granted the federal status – so that we could officially help not only patients from the Krasnodar region, but all residents of North Caucasus, the Rostov oblast, the Crimea and other south Russian regions. Our material and technical resources and experience of our staff let us function as a federal centre.”

Q.: What can you say about the upgrading of the hospital? The first stage has been completed; what about the second one?

A.: Really, reconstruction of the hospital is our only weak point. Lots of objects that fail to comply with a number of contemporary requirements must be replaced – the old buildings demolished and the new ones erected instead.

I am glad to see some progress here. Last November, Governor Veniamin Kondratiev addressed President Vladimir Putin asking him to help solve the problem – so it will be solved. However this year there will be no constructions, I hope that money will appear in 2017, so that the second stage of the construction of a new super-modern hospital will be completed.

Q.: The regional hospital is often referred to as a leading medical institution in Russia. What are the grounds for such assertion?

A.: For many years, Russia’s Head Cardiosurgeon Leo Bokeria has been recording the operations done in the country. Besides, we have bulletins published annually, with all official statistics. And it states that it is we who have been performing most of the operations on heart and lung diseases.

Q.: What are the main development trends of contemporary surgery?

A.: Probably, the main trend is to reduce surgical intervention to a minimum. For instance, in the past you should open the chest to operate on the heart – now it’s all different. Stent angioplasty is being widely used. The technology means introduction of a stent into the coronary vessels. A stent is a thin metallic tube that, when releasing like a spring, will improve the blood supply of the heart.
