Krasnodar, 13 October – Yug Times. The Aframax Rio oil tanker, which caught fire off the coast of Sochi, has been towed to a safe location. According to Russia’s Ministry of Transport, the vessel has been towed to safety and containment booms have been deployed. An adequate supply of oil-absorbent materials has also been prepared. Specialists from the Marine Rescue Service are assessing the tanker’s technical condition.
The tanker, which was carrying a cargo of oil and sailing under the Liberian flag, was reportedly attacked by unmanned surface vessels. All 23 crew members, who were Indian nationals, were rescued. Preliminary reports indicated that there were no injuries. The attack resulted in an open oil fire in the Black Sea.
The following day, Sochi Mayor Andrei Proshunin announced that the open fire on the tanker had been extinguished and that rescue vessels remained on standby.
Tests have found no concentrations of pollutants in the air exceeding the established maximum permissible limits, and the readings are within regulatory standards.
