Krasnodar, 15 September. Our today’s interviewee is Aleksei Lvov-Belov, Director of Gatov Premiera Artistic Association.

Q.: Usually, the Premiera officially opened a new season on August 15. Why did you decide to start earlier this year?

A.: Yes, we a little bit moved away from the tradition and started the new season two days earlier – with the Tsar’s Bride [opera by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov]. This year is rich in symbolic dates and events. Yuri Grigorovich, an outstanding contemporary choreographer, People’s Artist of the Soviet Union, celebrated his 95th birthday on January 2, while his offspring – the Krasnodar Ballet Theatre – had its 25th season opened.

On the maestro’s birthday, his favourite ballet, The Nutcracker, was played. In the prologue, we presented a fragment of The Golden Age ballet – the first play of the Krasnodar [Ballet] Theatre, and unique archival video snapshots of Grigorivich’s work in the Kuban region. Another reason for our creative inspiration took place on January 13, when Leonard Gatov, the founder of the Premiera Artistic Association, would have celebrated his 85th birthday. We dedicated the special Arts Marathon called “Under Leonard’s Star” to this event – the marathon is being held in many Kuban municipalities, and will culminate in November with a grand gala concert.

One more significant date is the 25th anniversary of Georgi Garanyan’s Big Band.

Q.: What plays have you prepared for your young spectators?

A.: At first, we will present Peter and the Wolf, a well-known symphonic fairy tale by Sergei Prokofiev. Through this play, children will get a chance to informally get acquainted with the instruments of a symphonic orchestra. Of course, I will not reveal you all our secrets, but believe me that the play is worth the attention of both children and adults.

Traditionally, we will add some magic to the life of Krasnodar residents during the New Year holidays – by the children musical Masha and Vitya against The Wild Guitars. The Kid and Karlsson, after a favourite cartoon, staged by Yuri Grogorovich’s Ballet Theatre, will be another premiere performance of this season.
