Krasnodar, 7 June – Yug Times. The strawberry season is in full swing. One of the major suppliers of ripe berries is the Republic of Adyghea. Every year the number of people wishing to grow strawberries increases.
Apart from the profitability of this business, several other factors play their role here. These are state support for beginning farmers, availability of agricultural land and lack of alternatives for high earnings. This business is most widespread in the Krasnogvardeisky district which local farmers call Strawberry Valley.
Strawberries from the Republic of Adyghea are sent to different parts of the country: Volgograd, Voronezh, Samara, Penza, Novosibirsk and Urengoi. Farmers also supply strawberries to chain shops in Moscow.
However, this year's strawberry season may end earlier than usual. The farmers are already harvesting late varieties.
Garden strawberry is a perennial plant. Therefore, having purchased planting material once, the farmers can further use their own seedlings. Quite popular are Italian varieties – Asia, Africa, Primi.
The farmers practically do not plant strawberries of Russian selection. Naturally, the restrictions imposed by Western countries have affected the strawberry growers, though they have not ruined the business. Another problem is unfair competition. Farmers complain that their colleagues, who are illegally engaged in berry growing and, accordingly, do not pay taxes, undercut their prices.
