Krasnodar, 21 December. Landscape Over 17,000 saplings of European alder have reportedly been planted in the mountainous part of Sochi to prevent soil erosion and landslides.
The planting began last autumn and lasted for over a month. The area of the new plantations exceeds three hectares. “The trees were planted in direct proximity from the infrastructure of Rosa Khutor Resort, within the right-of-way of the forestry road stretched along the Mzymta River, where there was no vegetation and the soil was prone to washing away. Soil erosion is typical for our area due to a high angle of slopes and huge level of precipitation causing undercutting,” Denis Ryltsev, Director of Rosa Khutor’s Environmental Agency, explained. “We have been doing such plantings for three years in a row. In total, nearly 11,000 plants have been planted – willow, blackberries, hornbeams, and others. But the highest survivability rate was shown by European.” European alder is a native species that grows splendidly on heavy-textured loamy soils which are peculiar for significant areas of the Black Sea terrain around Sochi
