Krasnodar, 26 September. Back in 2012, the Krasnodar city authorities announced that they would remove the railroads from the city centre behind its eastern outskirts and launch a light rail instead.

The Krasnodar Transit project was to be launched by 2012 as part of the program, “Give a metropolitan appearance to Krasnodar.” However, in 2015 the program was closed down. Meanwhile, the railroads continue to intersect the city centre, putting obstacles to the increased vehicle traffic.

In 2015, the project called Surface Metro was presented in Krasnodar. Time passed by, and the project was recalled for several times every year. The latest announced cost price of the project was 138.3 billion roubles. So far, not too many city dwellers are scheduling their trips to work thinking about the opportunities of the surface metro.

In 2007, an idea of extending Dumenko Street till Kalnin Street along the Kuban River Embankment appeared for the first time; the project was going to be realised in 2008, and then – in 2011, 2016 and, finally, 2019. Ultimately, the project was included into the Krasnodar 2030 Strategy, though back in 2020 the city authorities announced that they wanted to accomplish it in 2022. The year 2022 is now nearing the end, but it is still unclear whether this road will appear.
