Krasnodar, 8 September. On September 5–9, Sochi is hosting the national championship in open water swimming which marathon swimmers consider as the main contest of the year.
The championship has summoned over 100 athletes from 18 Russian regions. The regional teams were formed on the basis of qualifying rounds at 5,000 m freestyle. Three additional teams – those of the Yaroslavl, Tula and Moscow regions – were invited as last year’s national champions in open water swimming. “It is for the third time in the row that tha open water swimming championship is gathering best athletes of our country at the sea area of the Smena National Children’s Centre. I am confident that this event will become an unforgettable feast of sports both for its participants and guests,” Igor Zhuravlev, Director of Smena Children’s Centre said.
When reviewing the regional team totals, the jury will be taking into account the results of all athletes of the respective team as the sums of the scores received at the distances of 5, 10 and 25 km, and the 1,250 m relay.
