Krasnodar, 26 January. Last weekend, Krasnodar, Anapa, Novorossiysk, Gelendzhik and Sochi became venues of mass protest actions against the arrest of the oppositionist Aleksei Navalny.
The rallies had not been approved by the authorities. The protesters gathered in the main squares of the cities and marched through the central streets. Mostly they were peaceful protests. At the same time, the protest in Krasnodar was clouded with a scandal around the monument to the Cossack pioneers. One of the protesters climbed the pedestal and took off his pants in front of the crowd. The Kuban Cossack Host expressed outrage about the incident. In Anapa, information appeared that local police officers had tried to plant drugs to one of the female demonstrators. The regional police office called this information fake news, asserting that what the officers did was just holding a talk with her.
After the demonstration, Navalny’s Krasnodar team headquarters announced that several persons, including the headquarters’ deputy coordinator Sofia Piliukova, were detained in a coffee-house. According to them, she was given five days of administrative detention, and the others were adjudged to fines and arrest.
