Krasnodar, 17 October – Yug Times. Dominique Görlitz, a known German explorer and botanist, plans to go for an unusual sea cruise in 2019. He prepares mission Abora IV and plans to cross the Black Sea from Sochi to Crete, a part of the voyage of the legendary Argonauts bringing the Golden Fleece back to Hellas. The recent presentation of Görlitz’s expedition held in Berlin excited interest of scholars from different countries of the world.
The ancient Greek myth about the Argonauts is well known, and it is known to have been based on real events. For many years, ancient Greek seafarers would go to the Caucasian coast of the Black Sea, first on reed and later on wooden ships. It was them who founded the city-states of Hermonassa, Horhippia, Toric, Phanagoria and others along the north-eastern coast of the Black Sea.
Would the contemporary sailors be able to make a back cruise - from the Caucasus to the Greek islands - in our time? This is the aim Dominique Görlitz set for himself and his crew. The journey would begin in Sochi. The 3,000-km-long route would cross the Black Sea, the Sea of Marmara, and the Aegean Sea. En route, the crew would call the ancient site of Chersoneses near Sevastopol, Varna, Istanbul, Çanakkale (Turkey, the site of the ancient Troy), and the Greek islands of Skyros, Kithos and Milos. Crete, the final destination of the ancient Argonauts, would also be the destination of the contemporary voyage.
The Abora would be a 4 m long boat weighing 14 tons, built of reed from Titicaca Lake, Bolivia. Now Görlitz has started to enrol the international crew for the trip. In March 2019, the 12-member crew is to gather in Sochi to complete the assembly of the boat.
