ЮГ Times. The general public in Adyghea asks Russian Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev to return the direct election of the Head of the Republic of Adyghea.
A public campaign calling for the resumption of the popular choice of the Republican Head has begun on the Internet platform change.org, opened a couple of years ago for such purposes. Since October 14 when the petition was placed on the Internet, about 4,000 persons, or more than 1% of the total number of voters in Adyghea, have signed it. The regional public got discontented when last spring the State Council of Adyghea had adopted amendments to the Republican Constitution cancelling the direct election of its supreme office holder. Thus, in 2017 the new Republican Head is to be elected by the deputies of the Adughean Parliament. The petition entitled “Residents of the Republic of Adyghea demand direct election of the Republican Head” was placed by Arambiy Khapai, who is quite popular in the region. Back in the 1980s he was a two-time sambo (Russian martial art) world champion and many times USSR champion; now he heads the coaching council of the Sambo Federation.
“The practice of holding state positions and leading posts in the political parties’ regional structures by the people directly allied to the Head of the Republic of Adyghea contradicts ethical rules and norms of the state government system,” reads the document. “Nepotism and tribalism in the governmental system of the Republic of Adyghea is aimed at the estrangement of the society from direct government of the state; it weakens the governmental institutions and contributes to the development of corruption and conflict of interests with prejudice to the interests of the society.”
