Sochi has once again become an international capital - this time, a choir capital.
Last week, the World Choir Games, a major international competition that takes place once every two years, started in Sochi.
For ten days, from June 6 until 16, 283 choirs from 36 countries will be competing at the city’s concert grounds. Russia has sent 119 choirs to the Games - over 3,000 persons altogether, in addition to 164 choirs from abroad with over 9,000 singers.
The Games have reportedly gathered best of the best only, selected from more than 40,000 singers from 70 countries.
Singers from Kuban are also participating in the event. All choirs working at the Kuban Philharmonic Society came to Sochi to form a consolidated choir involved in the gorgeous ceremonies of inauguration and closing of the Choir Games.
“Rehearsals began several weeks ago,” explained Gennadi Tomilin, Music Director of the Philharmonic Society. “A big responsibility lies on our teams - to open this event of a worldwide importance.”
The Krasnodar region is known to have solid traditions of choir singing. There are 152 professional and over 500 amateur choirs in the region. Kuban has more than once initiated various festivals and contests of choir art.
