Krasnodar, 27 September. Sochi customs officers have reportedly intercepted an attempt to smuggle jewellery worth 32 million roubles from Dubai.

“In a jacket left in a luggage trolley, officers found a package containing earrings, chains, bracelets, and necklaces made of yellow and white metals, with and without inlays, some engraved with logos of Cartier, BVLGARI, HERMES, and others,” reported Marina Zhupanova, press secretary of the Sochi branch of the Krasnodar Customs Office. “During a personal inspection, officers also discovered a cut gemstone hidden in a sock the passenger was wearing.”

The passenger explained that she had bought the jewellery at a market in Dubai and did not recall their exact value. She claimed the gemstone was a gift from the seller, and said that unknown individuals had asked her to transport the boxes.

“An expert evaluation determined that the jewellery was made from 750-grade gold alloy and included inlays of diamonds, onyx, mother-of-pearl, and carnelian. The cut gemstone was identified as a natural diamond weighing two carats,” said Alexander Viukov, acting deputy head of the Sochi Airport customs post.
