Krasnodar, 8 April – Yug Times. The environmental damage caused by the tanker oil spill in the Kerch Strait has been estimated by the special commission at more than 84.9 billion roubles. 

“The fragments of the sunken tanker are constantly examined by divers; the seabed is monitored within a one-kilometre zone from the coast with the help of remotely operated equipment; space monitoring technologies, drones and patrol groups of rescuers on boats are used to control the situation in the water area,” reported Aleksandr Kurenkov, Minister of Emergency Situations of Russia. 

The Minister of Transport, Ro man Starovoit spoke about the completion of the investigation into the causes of the crash of the Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 tankers in the Kerch Strait. 

“The main reasons for the accidents, according to the Commis sion's conclusions, were the failure of the captains and shipowners to comply with the restrictions on the navigation season in the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait. In addition, the vessels crews had not been manned with qualified personnel in accordance with the le gal acts of the Russian Ministry of Transport,” said Roman Starovoit.
