Krasnodar, 26 May. It is not enough to be born to a Cossack family – one has to become a Cossack, to know their history and remember the beginnings of the Cossackdom. It is necessary to put in interest to these as well as to many other things from early childhood. In order to contribute to education, promote love to one’s background and enrich young Cossacks with knowledge, a trip to Krasnodar was organised for students of Cossack classes from Adyghea by initiative of Chair of the Young Cossack Youth of Adyghea Yekaterina Zagorulko and support of Ataman of the Maikop Cossack Detachment Aleksandr Danilov and Board of the Kuban Cossack Host. “This was the first and very much awaited journey for the young Cossacks from Adyghea. First of all, we wanted the students to relax and at the same time imbibe knowledge about Kuban Cossacks,” commented Yekaterina Zagorulko.

The first destination of the trip was St. Prince Alexander Nevsky’s Host Cathedral. The tour consisted of three parts: listening to the history of the Cathedral, introduction to the style of the interior paintings, and demonstration of epitome techniques. The process of painting in any temple is very long and hard. Before painting images on the wall, their sketches or draft are made. It is a very costly variant, but it is more practical and convenient. However, one may cope without it if the budget is limited: there exists a digital technique, when the image is modelled by computer and transferred onto the walls with the projector. Then the tourists moved to the square in front of the Legislative Assembly.

“Dear Cossacks, let me draw your attention to the monument to Catherine II. It recounts the transfer of the Kuban land to Cossacks in 1792. The monument was erected in 1907 and ruined in 1920 by the Bolsheviks. However, recently the destroyed monument was restored,” explained the guide. Erik Grishchuk, Deputy Chair of the Kuban Young Cossack League, said that the tour entitled ‘Yekaterinodar, a Cossack city’ has been held for a couple of years. “It is a scheduled event of the Kuban Cossack Host, one of its main activities. To date, students of all Cossack schools – eighty altogether – have taken part in this tour, in addition to students of Cossack cadet schools.” After the tour, Maksim Kubikov, the eldest representative of Cossack guides and Deputy Chair of the Young Cossack League of Adyghea, said; “I go to the Military Patriotic Club ‘Zastava’ (Picket) for six years, I have never pitied that I came here when I was a little boy – it was owing to my coach, a hereditary Cossack himself. I am interested to learn of the historical past of Krasnodar, for I share the Cossack’s ideas and their spiritual constituent.”
