Krasnodar, 23 December. On December 14, the Yug Times weekly co-hosted the online conference entitled “‘Green’ Future of Banks: Regional Aspect of Sustainable Development of Financial Organizations.”

The event was held in the framework of the program, “Time for New Strategies” and moderated by Diana Lipinskaya, Director of the Krasnodar branch of Centre Invest Bank.

In her speech, Diana Lipinskaya noted that according to the Expert RA rating agency, in the near future banks will be determining the ESG agenda in Russia – due to a number of factors, one of which is deep involvement of banks in ESG transformation and their readiness to integrate the ESG metrics in their work. Dmitri Cheltsov, Association of European Business Deputy CEO and GR Director, said that “the environmental agenda is becoming a priority task both for governments and for businesses. Banks that gradually augment the share of ‘green’ financing in their credit portfolios play a key role in this process. In the framework of the ‘Green Initiative’ project, the Association of European Business stays in close contact with leading players of the banking and financial markets, and it constantly analyzes the current situation at the European and Russian markets.”

Oleg Zharko, Chairman of AEB Southern Regional Committee, stressed that “promotion of ESG ideas among the business sector is a formula for successful implementation of the ‘green’ agenda and ESG principles in the banking sphere.” Recently, the Bank of Russia published the tactical aims of the workgroup that had been summoned to work on the issues of sustainable development and ESG agenda. The main aims were defined to develop the tools and the infrastructure for the market of sustainable development financing, and creation of conditions and opportunities for the companies needed to perform ESG transformation of their businesses. Besides, the Bank of Russia amended the standards for the issuance of ‘green’ and social bonds by making them more flexible.

At present, the Central Bank is working on the formation of the tool for ‘green’ mortgage loans and developing recommendations on how to reckon the ESG and sustainable development issues in the work of public joint-stock companies.
