Krasnodar, 20 August. Seven natural sites in various Kuban municipalities have been designated protected areas.
On August 12, Kuban Governor Veniamin Kondratiev signed the decree on foundation of new natural protected areas of regional significance. The unique environmental systems occupy 382 hectares in Uspensky, Mostovsky, Temriuk, Kushchevsky and Seversky rayons, and in Goriachy Kluch and Gelendzhik.
For instance, Lake Samurskoe in Apsheronsk rayon is the biggest lake on the northern slopes of the North-West Caucasus. The Universitetsky Waterfall near Mezmai is the northernmost habitat of Colchian box, Caucasian belladonna and shade-loving autumn crocus. Whale’s Harbour is famous for unique archaeological findings, including remains of fossilized molluscs: gastropods and bivalves, as well as separate fragments of a whale-cetotherium that used to live in the waters of the primordial ocean.
