Krasnodar, 1 October. The Young Kuban Cossack League has been functioning for three years. Although this movement appeared not long ago, it already plays a notable role in the region’s public life and educational environment, contributing to the rebirth of Cossack customs and traditions in our region.
Currently the League joins students of about 4,500 Cossack classes, compared to 3,500 three years ago. The number of Cossack schools that are members of the League has also grown from 25 to 62. There are also 17 Cossack kindergartens in the region.
Since the origin of this public movement, numerous Cossack groups have opened at vocational schools and colleges. Now the League has its representations in 27 colleges, and it plans to open them in higher educational establishments.
Volunteering has been one of the most important directions of the Young Cossack League’s activity since the very beginning. In 2018, the League even initiated an annual activity called “In the Name of Kuban.” Its members are young Cossack volunteers from various towns and cities who take care of war memorials, help elderly people, veterans and families in distress, take patronage over orphan asylums, boarding schools, rehabilitation centres and geriatric homes.
Cossack educational system has always paid special attention to cultivation of military traditions and physical culture of future defenders of the Fatherland. No wonder that the contemporary Young Cossack League also pays much attention to it. Young Cossacks can demonstrate their dexterity, strength, and will-to-win spirit at the regional Cossack youth sport games held annually since 2018, and at the championship in military handto-hand fighting for the Cup of the Ataman of the Kuban Cossack Host. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, all these sport and other events are now suspended.
The youth take an active part in all activities of the Kuban Cossack Host. During Cossack remembrance days, they pay tribute to their ancestors who perished heroically or became innocent victims of the criminal regime; they march along with their adult counterparts during the annual parade dedicated to an anniversary of the Law on Rehabilitation of Purged Peoples – Cossacks were among them; they participate actively in solemn activities dedicated to the celebration of anniversaries of the foundation of the Kuban Cossack Host and the Day of Kuban Cossacks; and they take part in military field trainings where they are introduced to the fundamentals of military training.
The traditional educational event “Cossack Dictation” calls special interest of young Cossacks. It is a unique experience of our region that allows everyone to check the level of their knowledge about the Cossack history and culture. In 2019, over 62,000 persons wrote the Cossack Dictation (in 2018 – only 25,000).
With the League, the youth can not only show their knowledge but realize their talents and apply their existing skills. For instance, fans of visual arts take part in the photo contest “History of Kuban Cossacks in Persons;” teenagers that are fond of fiction participate in the readers’ contest entitled “I Glorify My Fatherland.” Little Cossacks that have organizational skills and want to try themselves in public activities participate in the contest of social projects aimed at solution of socially important problems.
