Krasnodar, 22 August – Yug Times. Division of the oncoming traffic flows should reduce the occurrence of road accidents caused by head-on collisions.
Governor Veniamin Kondrative has reportedly ordered that the highway services should build road barriers along the regional and local motor roads. He was quoted as saying that this is caused by safety considerations for the participants of road traffic, whose number reaches maximum in summer. Because of the huge flow of holidaymakers, Kuban has become a national ‘leader’ in the number of road accidents. The authorities are promising to install metallic, concrete or rope barriers along at least 70% roads by 2023.
Last July, the regional Prosecutor’s Office submitted the draft bill on the installation of dividing barriers along the motor roads to the regional Legislative Assembly. The deputies are supposed to start working with the document in autumn. According to the road police statistics, last year Krasnodar province became the national ‘leader’ in the number of victims in road accidents: 1,053 persons died in the region due to them. The peak of accident incidence rate falls on the resort season.
Experts stated that barriers built to divide the oncoming traffic are one of the most efficient ways to ensure safety of the drivers and their passengers. According to them, it is the barrier dividers that may eliminate one of the most important causes of road accidents – entering the oncoming lane.
Over the past year, every ninth road accident with lethal result was caused by entering the oncoming lane, Konstantin Avakian, Business Projects Manager of Avtospetstsentr Company stated. “Due to the installation of barrier dividers, the accident incidence rate in 14 Russian regions has fallen a lot.”
Vladimir Savchenkov, Director General of FLAI PLENING Company, considers that whichever the barriers may be – dividing or retaining – their main goal when an alarm condition is going to occur is to safeguard the human life and minimize damage for the vehicle. “Road barriers protect a vehicle against slipping into the ditch in most dangerous sectors of the road: on the bridges, elevated surfaces or by precipices,” Vladimir Savchenkov says. “Dividing barriers divide the roadbed into several parts, thus preventing vehicles from bumping into oncoming ones. By statistics, two thirds of road accidents happened on oncoming lanes, because the drivers had miscounted the distances, their own capabilities, and disregarded the weather conditions.”
