Krasnodar, 16 April – Yug Times. Two central squares in Krasnodar may be renamed. What is at issue is Teatralnaya and Yekateriniskaya squares. The need to rename Teatralnaya square has arisen in light of the changed realia, members of Krasnodar Civic Chamber announced at a recent session of the Place Names Commission. Many local people are used to calling this square ‘Gorodskaya’, i.e. ‘a city square.’ Besides, after the reconstruction its area has enlarged in size. The renaming of Yekaterininskaya (literally, ‘Catherine’s’) square located in front of the building of the regional Legislative Assembly, will allow to avoid parallelism of the place names – with the nearby Catherine’s Park with a monument to Empress Catherine II.
“Cossacks have for a long time been wishing to have a Cossack square in [Krasnodar], the capital of the Cossack land,” first deputy Ataman of the Yekaterinodar District Cossack Community Vasili Pavlik said.
