Krasnodar, 28 March – Yug Times. Television has long ago become an indispensable part of our modern life. It is omnipresent in our life – but its inner workings remain hidden off screen. Natalia Tovancheva, Director of the Kuban TV and Radio Broadcasting Company and author of three books, lift the shroud of secrecy surrounding the mechanics of TV business.
Q.: Is your area of responsibility – I mean, the TV company, big?
A.: Yes, it’s quite big – in Krasnodar and in Sochi we have two TV channels: Rossiya 1 and Rossiya 24, three radio stations – Radio Russia, Vesti FM and Mayak, and a website. Every channel has a style of its own.
Q.: It seems that news from the Kuban region are more often broadcasted nationwide that, say, from Tyumen or Kurgan –
A.: You are right. We closely cooperate with national channels as well as separate programs – News, Good Morning. Every day, I get a request from a federal channel to prepare some material for them.
Q.: Is it the Kuban region that generates news, or are the incoming requests a sign of professionalism of your team?
A.: Both. The Kuban region is a boiling information pot. But if we were working badly, our Moscow-based colleagues would be flying here themselves to shoot the news.
Q.: What does the modern TV look like? Is there any threat from Internet and, in particular, YouTube, where really full-fledged TV projects are appearing?
A.: One character of a famous Soviet film alleged that “in the future, there won’t be cinema or theatres – just television.” As we can see, theatre and cinema have survived. Electronic literature has not killed paper books – just the opposite, a renaissance interest has arisen to conventional paper. I think that customary television will for the time being remain alongside with bloggers and social networks.
Q.: You are a philologist by education. What can you say about mother tongue skills of our contemporaries?
A.: Presently, the significance of literacy is wrongfully underestimated. In the past, it was one’s dress that helped to impress – now it is how he or she speaks that will tell much about that person. A really bad thing occurs if you open your mouth but have nothing to say, or if you are tongue-tied.
