Krasnodar, 20 March – Yug Times. On March 14, Gorodissky & Partners law firm held a seminar in Krasnodar called “The contemporary role of intellectual property in doing business”.

At the beginning of the panel discussion, Valeri Medvedev, Gorodissky & Partners’ Managing Partner, showed connections between innovations and intellectual property, able to increase the added value of material assets and give additional profit. The speaker quoted Bill Gates’ words: “Patents are the new gold rush.”

According to the World Intellectual Property Report, if back in 1970 the worldwide license fee payments amounted to USD 2.8 billion, in 1990 the figure was USD 27 billion, and in 2010 - USD 180 billion. “Russia’s figures are rather modest against this background: the 25th place in the list of the world’s innovative economies,” he said. “In 2017, a bit more than 36,000 applications for invention patents were submitted; in 2015, the figure was over 45,000. To compare: in 2017, China registered over 1.3 million inventions; in 2015 - 1.1 million. The real problem is not our falling down against the background of China’s climbing up; it is the difference in the total figures that is the main problem.”

Vladimir Bashkirov, Senior Partner on Information Search, delivered a report on patent infoware as a condition for successful business activities. He also mentioned such efficient means of competitive practices as reverse engineering. It means that a product made in one place is disassembled and studied together with its technical documentation in some other place - to be able to understand the principle of its work. Then an equivalent product is made with a mighty support of patent lawyers.

This practice is not a theft. There are many companies - first of all, in China - that are professionally engaged in reverse engineering.
