Krasnodar, 11 December – Yug Times. Recently, the regional Ministry for Natural Resources reportedly put up for auction 45 forest-protection belts. The WWF experts found out that this decision was unlawful, because it contradicted the Russian Forest Code that does not allow lumbering in these areas.
As far as the Ministry did not react to the environmentalists’ demands to cancel the auctions, the WWF sought help of federal agencies, including the General Prosecutor’s Office.
According to the documents in possession of The Yug Times weekly, the regional Ministry for Natural Resources had been taking unsubstantiated decisions on cancellation or alteration of the status of the forest-protection belts, thereby giving itself an opportunity to legally put them up for auctions. It was also ascertained that the procedure of entering information into the State Forest Register had also been voluntarily changed. The Federal Forestry Agency (Rosleskhoz) issued an order on elimination of the law violations and bringing of the public officers to account. All materials of the unscheduled check were sent to the Krasnodar regional Prosecutor’s Office.
The World Wildlife Fund stated that the Krasnodar regional Ministry for Natural Resources had been regularly committing such violations of law.
