Krasnodar, 15 November – Yug Times. Forty-seven Russian airports, including three in the Krasnodar region, will reportedly be named after outstanding historical figures.
This is the idea of the project entitled Russia’s Great Names and coorganised in October by the Civic Chamber, Russian Geographic Society, Russian Historical Society, and Russian Military Historical Society. On November 12, the final stage of the project began - the voting to determine the winners. Anyone can choose one airport from the list and cast their vote according to the principle ‘one vote - one airport - one name’. The voting will last until November 30. Then the votes will be counted, and on December 5 the winning names will be announced.
The three airports in the Krasnodar region to receive ‘personal names’ are those in Krasnodar, Sochi and Anapa.
“In my opinion, this is a very positive project on a number of aspects,” chair of the regional Civic Chamber Lubov Popova. said. “The national history, and the Kuban history too, is a remarkable cause to remember our history in faces, [to recall] the people who in many respects had created our history.”
The long-lists of Krasnodar and Sochi have 11 names each; that of Anapa has 10 names.
The practice of naming airports after some great compatriots is a well-known global trend. Say, the international airport in New York is named after the 35th American President, John F. Kennedy; the airport in Rome bears the name of Leonardo da Vinci; that of New Delhi is named after Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
In Russia, the new international airport of Rostov-on-Don, constructed before the 2018 Football World Cup, was named after Cossack Ataman Matvei Platov, one of the Russian officers that took Paris and routed Napoleon. His name was also chosen in the result of a popular voting.
