Krasnodar, 25 September – Yug Times. Sergei Zengin, President of the Krasnodar State Institute of Culture, ponders on how to overcome a backlog of problems.
“Five years ago, our Institute was in dire straits - it had been acknowledged inefficient. Let me explain how it happened. “There were five components used to determine the successfulness of a higher educational establishment: the entering students’ education level (the average total of the Unified State Exam); the material resources; the financial situation; the academic activity; and the staff qualifications. Our Institute then failed to comply with four of the five criteria.
“This is why we had to raise everything at once. It was very difficult. Due to our inside problems, nobody would participate in any governmental projects. It was necessary to prove our relevance and get involved in various statesupported programs to be able to get financial backup.
“At the same time, the educational content had to be renewed. The Institute was kept afloat thankful to its nonspecialised faculties - economics, law, management, etc. And our students of these faculties were those who could not enter the Kuban State University or the Kuban State Agrarian University. As far as the emphasis was put on these specialisations, it was hard to develop our ‘native’ artistic specialisations. What we have now are just culture and arts specialisations.
“Another indicator of a university’s successfulness is the conferences, concerts and festivals it holds. We held very few of them five years ago. Now we have annually over 100 artistic events, and over 50 scientific activities. We managed to overcome the difficult situation, and now we are more than merely efficient - we are on the list of Russia’s best culture higher schools. “All our today’s achievements are the results of that hard and tedious work, in which all my colleagues partook.
