Krasnodar, 29 August – Yug Times. Our today’s interlocutor is Valentina Zernova, expert on certification of fur and fur products, head of the Light Industry Research Laboratory of the Kosygin Russian State University of Technologies, Design and Art. “In the past, clothes from elite and expensive furs, like mink, sable and blue fox, used to be worn sporadically - when going to theatre, visiting other people or friends. Fur coats were not meant for everyday wear; people tried to spare them. Presently, fur clothes, including mink fur, have become items of everyday wear. The conditions of their use have become more rigid and intense. Currently, fur is exposed to additional mechanical impacts - in the form of stretching or rubbing, for instance, in public transport. The changed source of raw materials, management of the animals, and the fell processing technology have significantly affected the wearing qualities of fur clothes, so their life period has considerably reduced. According to the Scientific Research Institute of Fur Industry, in the past mink clothes would serve for about ten seasons; now their serviceable life doesn’t go beyond eight seasons for undyed mint and six seasons for dyed or bleached mink. For other furs, serviceable life is even less. “In order to catch up with modern fashion trends, the producers are trying to produce showy and aesthetically beautiful things rather than durable ones. Therefore, they are using different technologies: bleaching, dying and epilation - removal of the barbs and fell trimming. Of course, if the barb that resists external stresses would be removed, the wearing qualities would deteriorate, but the aesthetic qualities would not: such clothes would be much more attractive, brighter and lighter. It would be a ‘for show’ variant.”
