Krasnodar, 15 August – Yug Times. Although the contemporary medical science cannot cure HIV infection, it can suppress for decades the activity of the virus. Irina Viazovskaya, Director of the Department of Medical Aid Organisation to Adult Patients, comments on the current situation with HIV/AIDS morbidity in the Krasnodar region.
Q.: Mass media often announce that adult HIV infection has been totally cured in this or that country. What is your attitude to such news?
A.: Medical science does make progress - clinical tests of new anti-retroviral medicines are performed regularly; new convenient combined forms of medications are invented. At the same time, no pill able to fully cure the organism from HIV has been invented yet. What doctors can do is to suppress the HIV activity and slow down its progress for decades. Currently HIV infection is not a doom but a chronic disease - owing to the achievements of modern medicine.
Q.: There is an opinion that HIV does not exist at all, and that AIDS is nothing more than a profitable business project. Is this allegation serious?
A.: There is a movement of the so-called ‘AIDS dissidents’ in Russia, who use different anti-scientific theories and deny treatment of HIV infection claiming that it does not exist. They say they have been living with the diagnosis of HIV infection for several years without any treatment. But the human immune system is individual - in some cases the disease may not manifest for decades, whereas in others it may develop quite fast.
