Krasnodar, 14 August – Yug Times. It’s the size of their pensions rather than the new pension law that urges many elderly residents of the Kuban region to continue working.
The current difficult economic situation cannot give the government a chance to leave the pension system as it is. Although the money paid as age pension is almost nothing, the national Pension Fund continuously feels a disastrous lack of resources. That was the fact that triggered off the pension reform in Russia: in the future, the retirement age will be 65 years for men and 63 years for women, compared with 60 and 55 years, correspondingly. The transition will last until 2034 - but the question has already arisen: where and how will the retirees work?
The governmental pension initiative has given birth to tensions in the society - but the dissatisfaction was more of an inertial kind, because the Russian seniors did understand quite well that they would not be able to exist for the money they get as pensions. The severe reality pushed them to continue working.
The level of income of most elderly people in Russia is so low that they live on the verge of poverty. Currently, the average monthly pension in the country is 14,000 roubles. Naturally, bearing in mind that the prices for food products, public utilities and medicines are permanently rising, the pensioners should be looking for some additional earnings. Some may be getting aid from their children, while others have to cut down their expenses - or to look for a job.
