Krasnodar, 21 June – Yug Times. Our today’s guest, Petr Romanishin, Director General of Fanagoria Estate Winery, reasons about the necessity of organising governmental support for viticulturists, formation of a wine consumption culture in Russia, and prospects for the national enogastronomic tourism.
Q.: What are the most pressing tasks for Fanagoria which is one of the country’s biggest winemaking companies?
A.: Fanagoria is a full-cycle winemaking property that owns over 3,000 Ha vineyards located in the Taman peninsula, between the Black and Azov Seas, and crafts still, sparkling, ice wines, brandies and grape marc vodka (chacha). Besides, we are the only Russian winery (and one of a dozen worldwide) that has its own cooperage, which is why we can age our wines and brandies not only in imported French and American oak barrels, but also in casks made from Caucasian oak by our in-house coopers. Besides, we have a nursery of our own, and develop own chain of wine boutiques.
In 2017, our winery processed over 27,000 tons of grapes. Our premium prize-winning wines are crafted from manually picked and meticulously selected grapes grown in the protected geographical indication “Kuban. Taman Peninsula.”
Q.: How would you describe the practical sense of the wine consumption culture concept?
A.: Under the current ban on wine advertising, the national winemaking industry has to communicate personally to each concrete adult wine consumer, which is why we work directly with many different target groups, give presentations, participate in the world’s most prestigious wine competitions, and run wine and enogastronomic tours.
Q.: Why do you consider wine tourism so much important for your success?
A.: People tend to self-educate when they travel, open the world to themselves and open up themselves to the world. So it would be totally incorrect to show the picturesque landscapes of the Taman peninsula, our sea beaches, curative mud volcanoes and peculiar Kuban cuisine without showing our wines. We have always believed that wine education of our tourists is one of the main tasks of the regional hospitality industry.
At Fanagoria, we can show our visitors what probably is the biggest underground wine cellar in the country (of the total area of 3,000 sq m) that accommodates wine barrels, a tasting hall and a wine museum. It is very interesting to see the cooperage - few contemporary people have ever seen how barrels are made. And of course, we offer a broad variety of our wines and spirits - to accompany local food served at our restaurants Cabernet in Sennoi and Hermonassa in Taman.
