Krasnodar, 27 March – Yug Times. The Yug Times begins a new series of publications dedicated to the present-day life of Kuban Cossacks. Our first essay is a story of the Anapa Cossack Community.

In February 2014, the Cossacks from Anapa were the first to go to Crimea to help the local people prepare the referendum on joining Russia.

— Our Cossacks have been to all ‘hot spots’: Chechnya, Abkhazia, Transnistria and Syria, — enumerates District Ataman Valeri Plotnikov.

To strengthen the economic basis of activity of Cossack communities, two years ago the regional authorities granted them the right to obtain land without having to take part in biddings. Among others, the Anapa district community also received land parcels. But for the time being it is out of the question that the Cossacks should gain any profit from them.

“At first, the land must be put in order which needs much effort and money,” says Plotnikov. “Besides, there are no farmers or agricultural managers among us, which is why we have to hire machines and other resources.” At the same time, he confidently looks into the future: “To advance, Kuban Cossack Ataman Nikolai Doluda together with regional and national leaders do their utmost. A new bill determining the Cossacks’ rights and obligations, and their status is to be adopted soon. Formation of the united national Cossack Host will provide a new impetus for the development of the Russian Cossack movement. Then our strength will increase tenfold.”
