Krasnodar, 15 March – Yug Times. On the Presidential election day, the voters will see eight names in the ballot paper — two nominees of parliamentary parties, one independent candidate, and five representatives of so-called “little parties” (ones that were not able to overcome the 5% Duma barrier). As a result, the canvassing campaign will be remembered more by the scandalous behaviour of certain candidates with ambiguous “unmasking” than by a genuine competition of the candidates’ programs and initiatives. Otherwise, the election campaign in the Krasnodar region was calm and quiet — or did it only seem to be so?

“On the whole, the campaign is running quite calmly in Kuban. First of all, it has to do with its definiteness. Secondly, all structures, starting from parties and candidates themselves and finishing with federal agencies, law enforcement and others, are looking more seriously at it [the campaign], because it’s their commander-in-chief who is elected [on that day],” said Sergei Myshak, human rights ombudsman in the Krasnodar region.

Public activist Denis Bondarevsky agrees with Mr. Myshak, however he has some questions to the work of the regional offices of some candidates: “The election campaign is being held in the Krasnodar region smoothly, without any denunciations and sharp debates. At the same time, a number of candidates did not show themselves in the region at all — so a question remains if they have any proxies authorized to act in their stead at all?”
