Krasnodar, 19 January – Yug Times. Kuban has broadly celebrated the traditional Day of Russian Press.
The regional Philharmonic Society was the venue of the festivity. The solemn event summoned more than 400 professionals — editors-in-chief, regional and local journalists, correspondents, and top managers of regional TV companies.
In his welcoming speech, Governor Veniamin Kondratiev noted that this year is the jubilee 155th anniversary of regional journalism: “In one of its issues, the first regional newspaper Kubanskie Voiskovye Vedomosti (Kuban Host Bulletin) wrote: ‘We must treasure every word’,” Kondratiev reminded the journalists. “This principle was important 150 years ago and it has remained so until now. Every word of yours has certain consequences, which is why it is so important to hold responsibility for every article and every appearance in public that may promote maintenance of stability or shatter the situation. The goal of journalism is to unite the society and show one’s view of resolving a problem, and not just to uncover it.”
According to Mr. Kondratiev, peculiar attention should be paid to objectivity in the work of mass media.
He thanked the journalists for their active work last year and for the help they rendered to the authorities in taking better-weighed solutions.
Mr. Kondratiev also mentioned that currently about 2,500 ‘junior correspondents’ are undergoing on-the-job training at various mass media, and awarded the winners of the regional contest of the journalist youth.
