Krasnodar, September 2 – Yug Times. The favourite Winter Theatre in Sochi was built in 1937, but the first night — opera Tsar’s Bride — was staged the following year, in May 1938, which is why all main jubilee activities have been scheduled for 2018.

Our today’s interviewee is Vladimir Misharin, general director of the Sochi Concert and Philharmonic Society.

“Many renowned groups have performed in the Winter Theatre - the Bolshoi and Maly Theatres, Obraztsov Puppet Theatre, LenKom, Sovremennik, and many others. Most famous performers - from Sergei Lemeshev and Arkadi Raikin to Klavdia Shulzhenko and Mikhail Zhvanetsky - have also appeared on its stage.”

Q.: How did the spectators change over the years? What are they like now?

A.: In my opinion, it is the most important thing - the spectators’ attitude to the theatre as a kind of cultural outlet - that did not change over the years. Here the people forget about their miseries and empathize with the characters on the stage; they get emotionally free and surprised. And this is what a spectator needs most of all.

Q.: Theatre is conservative per se - does this fact affect its popularity with the audience?

A.: Over its history, theatre has been regularly threatened by its competitors - cinema, TV, or Internet. Now festival technologies are on the rise. Nevertheless, demand for theatre continues to exist, and spectators, especially holidaymakers, are quite satisfied with simplified forms of the concerts, and Yuri Bashmet’s Winter Arts Festival has proved it.

Recently, I saw a multimedia performance and understood once again that new technologies bring forward a lot of opportunities into our practical life.

Q.: How are you getting prepared for the jubilee of the theatre?

A.: Our main celebrations have been scheduled for 2018, when a jubilee season will start. We are shaping our calendar in a very simple manner: every month there is some key event that attracts different genres and arts. The key event in January is the Club of the Merry and Smart (in addition to the New Year campaign), in February - Bashmet’s festival with his splendid two-week panorama, etc.

Our main goal is to shape up a rich and diverse program and popularize our theatre with contemporary spectators.
