Krasnodar, Augus 31 – Yug Times. The unique boxtree forests had survived the Ice Age, but they hardly survived the 2014 Olympics.
The list of the endangered forests includes groves in the Sochi National Park, Caucasus State Biospheric Reserve, and in Apsheronsk and Tuapse Forestries. When part of the unique groves were felled during the preparation to the Olympic Games, it was decided to import another boxtree species from Italy — but together with the trees harmful pickleworms were accidentally imported.
The only lawful way to fight the pickleworms is mechanic gathering of the caterpillars and pruning of the shoots with the eggs — but the pests live on the heights of up to 10 metres, and it is not so easy to catch them. The regional Ministry of Nature has more than once addressed federal authorities stressing that it is impossible to localize and annihilate the hotbed of the pest, but because of the bureaucratic slowness now it is ready to accept any help, asking volunteers, public activists and all nature enthusiasts to come and help gather the caterpillars and larvae.
