The election to the Legislative Assembly (regional parliament) will take place on September 10, i.e. less than a month.
Last week the regional Election Committee held a press briefing in Krasnodar, where its chairman Aleksei Chernenko announced the results of the nomination of candidates and stated that the election campaign has become overgrown with rumours that must be destroyed. He also said that many experts forecast that the election would be dull and not interesting, without intrigue and competition, but disproved that forecast with the following figures: there are 576 candidates (408 on the parties’ lists, and 168 in single-seat constituencies) registered for 70 deputy seats. In some constituencies, there are up to 17 candidates per seat.
A peculiarity of this election campaign will be absence of the Yabloko Party candidates, whose regional activists had fought with each other so heavily that they did not have time to get registered.
“We may state that the time of political romanticism and of romantics is over,” said Dmitri Vovchuk, member of the council of the Civic Control Association. “What is needed today for a successful participation in the country’s political life is more professional approach - today [any party] needs a high-class lawyer, accountant and PR expert.
The regional ombudsman Sergei Myshak noted that it was high time to adopt a sort of code governing the electoral processes in Russia.
“Chair of the [Central] Election Committee Ella Panfilova touched on this issue in her interview,” noted Mr. Myshak. “She uttered a very reasonable idea that Russia needs an Election Code.
