Regional Minister for Natural Resources Sergei Yeremin was quoted as saying at a press conference devoted to the proclaimed Year of Ecology in Russia that the authorities want to allow hunting for swans.
“Now there are more than enough swans and cormorants [living in the region],” stated Mr. Yeremin. “Their rapidly grown number is causing great damage to Kuban wild nature.”
According to the Ministerial statistics, over the past five years the number of swans has grown by 40–50% to about 10,000 head and continues to grow.
