Stable demand has been a peculiar feature of the poultry meat market. Thus investors find it very attractive. However, this factor also means tough competition among the producers who have to de-cide on their development strategy and tactics as well as market positioning. It was owing to the successful solution of these challenging tasks that Novorossiysk Poultry Farm has topped the list of best poultry meat producers in the Southern Federal District.
Our interviewee is Vladimir Mkhitaryan, Director of Novorossiysk Poultry Farm.
Q.: How would you describe the situation in Russian poultry farming?
A.: The production volumes are growing, but the situation remains difficult because our industry is lowly profitable. Over the past five years, the prices for meat have remained at the same level – every tiny growth of 3 to 5% is very soon followed by a decrease.
Q.: What are the main challenges Kuban poultry farmers are facing?
A.: Tough competition. Governor Veniamin Kondratiev and his team do much to support the local producers. I was at the meeting where Governor charged his subordinates to develop a mechanism that will increase the availability of locally made meat products in retail stores up to 65–70%.
Q.: What else may the authorities do to help develop domestic poultry farming?
A.: By supporting the domestic producer, the state invests in the improvement of the country’s food security. What we need today is cheap bank credits to develop stockbreeding and interest rate subsi-dies – like we had a couple of years ago.
Q.: What is your forecast for the industry for the near future?
A.: I am confident that Russian producers are prepared to export their products – but again, to take up exports they need governmental support. Poultry farmers have fully covered the domestic market and are ready to export meat abroad. And Russian export specialists may start promoting our agri-cultural products, not only oil, metals and precious stones.
