ЮГ Times. The current political and economic situation demands to develop a sports infrastructure that would be available to all, Aleksey Kopaigorodsky, Krasnodar City Deputy Mayor, said at a press conference last week.
Reanimation of the Ready for Labour and Defence program (the All-Union physical culture training program widely used in the USSR; abbreviated as GTO) had been discussed at the federal level for three years. Not all governmental officials were backing the idea – for instance, Sports Minister Vitali Mutko said that it was not needed, for the country was not making preparations for a war. Nonetheless, in March President Putin signed a federal law on GTO revival.
The Krasnodar authorities are known to have enthusiastically joined in the activity on restoration of the program. According to Mr. Kopaigorodsky, it is really necessary to propagandize this Soviet activity, bearing in mind today’s conditions.
