ЮГ Times. Fifty years ago maize was officially proclaimed ‘a strategic culture’ in the USSR. Now it is called upon to ensure satiation to third-world countries.
On August 30, Krasnodar played host to the first session of the media club dedicated to the 90th anniversary of DuPont Pioneer Company.
The history of friendship between Pioneer Company and Russia began 50 years ago, when Nikita Khrushchev, then First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, proclaimed maize ‘the queen of the fields.’ Since then, our business relations have been very successful. At the end of the 1980s, Pioneer Company even planned to build several factories in the USSR – however, this project was never accomplished due to the collapse of the Communist country and its economy.
Currently the Company has resumed its activity in Russia – and to a considerable extent it was caused by the global problems of the humankind.
In his speech delivered to the participants of the session, József Máté, Communications Manager DuPont Pioneer in Europe, stated that development of high-yielding agricultural hybrids is becoming of more importance in economy due to constantly growing population of the Earth. For instance, since the year 2000 the global yield of maize has grown by 1.5 times to one billion tons. Soyabeans are reportedly showing similar dynamics, with about 330 million tons to be produced annually by 2017. Experts forecast that the global population will reach 9 billion by 2050, and all of them will need nourishing food.
