ЮГ Times. When Dmitri Lopatin, then a 27-year-old scholar from Krasnodar, became the subject of criminal proceedings last year, his case was widely discussed in the region and beyond. Dmitri, a winner of the prestigious Zvorykin Innovations Prize and author of a series of patents, found himself in the dock because of the chemical substance he had ordered in China for scientific study. Later the law enforcement bodies came to know the situation, and Dmitri was exculpated. Now he continues his research - both in Russia and abroad.
“Relocation abroad to continue the scientific career is a very common phenomenon today. Scholars work in different countries, for somewhere they can have access to some equipment, and in other places to other facilities. This is pure science, but then the money issue comes… It may happen, that a team of scholars may get financing for a lab in a couple of countries, and they may spend more money for their investigations.”
Q.: You are working in India. Why did you choose that country?
A.: Currently India has one of the largest demands for alternative power worldwide. And it has a well thought-of strategy for its implementation.
Both the government and investors, including from other countries, are investing actively in the development of solar power engineering. When I worked in Krasnodar, I presented my developments to an Indian delegation, and then I received an offer from them.
Q.: Is the demand for additional power so high in India?
A.: Most dwellings in India are not connected to centralized electrical supply networks. The consumption in cities is considerably higher than the existing power stations can give.
Q.: What are you working on now?
A.: We are interested in several products of alternative power engineering. First, it is solar batteries that may be printed on different surfaces, for instance tiled roofs. Their efficiency is comparable to that of silicon solar batteries, but the efficiency is much higher.
The market price of a square metre of a silicon battery is USD 100-130 with an efficiency of 15-17%. The net cost of our development work is USD 15.
