In the village of Zarechny near the stanitsa of Dinskaya, there is a nameless common grave, with a plain iron monument and a plaque saying, “a Great Patriotic War veteran.” Nothing states that that is a mass grave. And there is no due monument above the grave…

The villagers say they have more than once asked the municipal and rural authorities to restore the grave and indicate that it is a common grave, not a nameless one. However, their requests were ignored.

The Yug Times has assumed an obligation to help the Dinskaya villagers complete their deed. We met Aleksey Maliuk, an architect himself and an offspring of a famous dynasty of architects, who promised to draw the design of the future memorial free of charge, and he at once set out to work.

A year has passed since then, but when our journalist visited the cemetery last week, what he saw was a five-point star above the old grave and a renewed paint. Nothing else…

With regard to the local businessmen’s intensions to pay for the construction of a new monument voiced last year, nothing has changed there either.

“Indeed, local businessmen had asked me to draw a design of the monument,” said architect Maliuk. “I decided to do it free of charge. The design was ready in a couple of months. The customers approved it. But then the process stopped.”

As it turned out, the patriotic initiative stalled at the local municipality.
