Our weekly’s theatre critic reviews The Tango for Three, a new production of the Krasnodar Drama Theatre.

Yelena Zhuravleva who staged the play is an experienced director and a graduate of a drama school.

Her Tango for Three is a very intimate piece, whose female protagonist lives by her past, without any hope for the future, regularly practising homesickness and quarrelling with her companion. Plus, there is some bizarre neighbour in her life – Jean, a Sorbonne professor of zoology.

The protagonist of the play is a fireworks woman full of internal fire and unspent love. So when she picks up the telephone to hear a proposal to perform at the famous Olympia music hall in Paris (the action takes place in France), she meets the challenge proudly, as you can expect it from a genuine star.

For everyone knows that if one was a diva, she would remain that for ever. The spectators really liked the new play – because of its touching nature and naïveté, lack of any refinement, and welcoming personal air.

The play has both a story and a fate – and the latter is recounted in confidence and with humour, while the tango that accompanies the performance from beginning to end adds it passion and delicacy. Undoubtedly, this is a viewable performance that is destined for success.
