He was quoted as saying that today "many events of the Great Patriotic War [part of WWII that lasted from Germany's attacking the USSR on June 22, 1941 until V-Day of May 9, 1945] are being reassessed, new interpretations are appearing, the liberators are being referred to as occupants and their feats are being suggested to sink into oblivion."
"We must do our utmost to let our children know the real truth about the Great Patriotic War," stressed Mr. Kondratiev. He stated that the students should not simply read 'dull' textbooks at their history lessons, but be able to listen to live stories of the eyewitnesses of those days: the war veterans and those who worked on the 'home front', those who were forging the Great Victory.
In his opinion, our memory of the feats during WWII is "the backbone of the spiritual code of our people, the basis for our conscience and morals."
"To lose it would mean to lose ourselves - and not to create anything in this life," said Mr. Kondratiev.
