Russian Cossacks want to join the Russian National Guard, whose creation was announced by President Vladimir Putin in early April.

"At the moment, we just want to join it [the National Guard]; it's our wish," Nikolai Doluda, ataman of the Kuban Cossack Host (the country's biggest Cossack detachment) was quoted as saying. He said that a "small structural unit" of Cossacks may be formed in the National Guard, but the issue must be resolved at the federal level.

"And God grant ... that the Cossacks of Russian Cossack troops would join the National Gurad," added Mr. Doluda.

President Putin has already issued a decree establishing a new federal service. Additionally, a draft law "On National Guard troops in the Russian Federation" has been submitted to the State Duma for consideration.

In Russia, the Cossacks are known to be helping fight illegal migration and unlawful drugs turnover; they defend the state border and take part in environmental activities and elimination of extraordinary accidents.

The country's most numerous Cossack troops are the Kuban Cossack Host.
