Cossack parades are held in Krasnodar evey year. They are devoted to anniversaries of rehibilitation of the repressed ethnic groups of the North Caucasus and Cossacks.
According to tradition, the Cossack detachments marched along Krasnaya Street, Krasnodar's main thoroughfare. The parade itself was held at Teatralnaya Square.
The contemporary Kuban Cossack Host is deployed in three Russian regions: the Krasnodar krai, and the Republics of Adyghea and Karachai-Cherkessia, and in the Republic of Abkhazia.
The Cossacks help fight illegal migration and unlawful drug turnover; they defend the state border and take part in the liquidation of the consequences of emergency situations.
Since September 2012, the Cossacks have been patrolling the streets of the Kuban cities and towns together with the police. They were also involved in the maintenance of public order during the Olympic Games'2014 held in Sochi.
Kuban Authorities Want to Restore Cossack Way of Life in Region
According to Kuban Cossack Host's Ataman Nikolai Doluda, to achieve this goal it is necessary first of all to increase the number of Cossacks. Today there are some 45,000 officially registered Cossacks in the region. "It's necessary to have a million or even two and a half million Cossacks [in the region], like it used to be in Kuban before 1917. That's when the Cossack way of life will be restored," he was quoted as saying.
In his turn, Kuban Governor Veniamin Kondratiev is confident that the Cossack movement "today should be simply preserved rather than restored".
He stressed: "Let's simply admit this way of life to our lives - and not be afraid of it".
