From Zaporizhia on the Dnieper to the Kuban

From Zaporizhia on the Dnieper to the Kuban

Krasnodar, 3 October – Yug Times. Last weekend, the Kuban region celebrated the 226th anniversary of the landing of the first group of pioneering Cossacks at the Taman coast.

The festivity began by the monument to the first Cossack settlers that appeared in the region in 1792, and went on in Ataman, an ethnographic skansen, with equestrian contests and a festival of Cossack folk culture. The monument was erected in Holovaty Square, Taman village, in 1911. Now it is felt as a collective image of the settlers and the reference point of the glorious history of the Kuban Cossacks. That was why representatives of all generations of Kuban Cossacks came to the monument last Saturday - from the Cossack Host Ataman (chieftain) to cadets of Cossack schools from all corners of the region. In his speech, Kuban Cossack Host Ataman Nikolai Doluda reminded the audience about the glorious past of the Cossack ancestors and thanked the contemporary fellow countrymen for their loyalty to old traditions.

“We take Taman as the sacred land for every Cossack,” he said. “It’s our cradle, where the Kuban [region] began. It was here where the Black Sea Cossacks brought their culture, customs and traditions that have survived until now.”

Pupils of the Cossack classes study local culture and history and are engaged in socially useful labour. For instance, they, together with their adult Cossack tutors, render aid to children’s and old people’s homes, and take part in various events organised in their municipalities. “We can see a lot of young people together with adult Cossacks,” Aleksandr Agibalov, Chairman of the Young Kuban Cossack League, said. “It proves the fact that we forbear to forget our past and bring up our children in the right way. In due time, members of our League will join the ranks of those who brought back to life the Cossack movement in Kuban.”
