Krasnodar, 6 July – Yug Times. The concept of sustainability is a new model of the humankind development, widely acknowledged by the international community. This rather sophisticated and variegated topic was discussed last week in Krasnodar during the discussion session “Integration of the UN sustainability goals in business strategies of contemporary companies. The context, essences and advantages,” organized by the Krasnodar regional branch of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RUIE) with the support of Philip Morris Sales and Marketing. The invitees to the discussion were regional governmental officials, business representatives and public activists, as well as experts of leading national platforms cooperating with the UN on the issues of sustainability and formation of standards of responsible business practice.
The discussion focused on the thesis asserting that neither global agenda nor national strategies may be considered or implemented if taken separately from each other. They are based on the concept of sustainability that is an unconditional trend that serves as a guideline for the business community. It is this trend that indicates to the direction of development of the global economy and to the competences the business community must form to remain sustainable.
The experts were confident that it is important to use different platforms to discuss the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the successful practices connected with them. The National Network of the UN Global Compact is reportedly one of such platforms that make it possible to successfully integrate Russia into the global processes in the sphere of sustainable development with due consideration for the peculiarities of both global and national socio-economic situation. With the support of the Russian Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the RUIE and the Russian Chamber of Trade and Industry, the National Network is currently implementing the pilot variant of the regional program of promotion of the values of the UN Global Compact in the sphere of sustainable development.
Alexei Borisov, Deputy Chairman of the United Nations Association of Russia, was quoted as saying that the SDGs are the result of a three-yearlong transparent process that took into consideration the views of various interested parties. The SDGs encompass all three aspects of sustainable development - economic growth, social integration and environmental protection. They are aimed at the elimination of the radical causes of poverty and satisfaction of the universal development need in the interests of all human beings.
