Krasnodar, 28 June – Yug Times. On June 20, the Sochi Motor Racing Circuit hosted tests of the first Russian-made solar-charged electric car. The car was designed and manufactured by a team of graduates and postgraduate students of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, known as the Polytech Solar Team.
SOL works without conventional fuel – the power is generated by the panels installed on the frame. During sunny weather, the 4 sq m solar batteries get fully charged in 6–7 hours, while the car is in motion. The project cost was about 10 million roubles. “We began this project from a scratch and passed along all stages – from the development of documentation to the assembly,” team leader Yevgeni Zakhlebaev said.
The first lap of the sun-car along a ring road was done along the F1 route. On this difficult route, the vehicle showed the speed of 85 km/h. On July 6, the project team will take part in the first round of the American Solar Challenge – a global race of the solar cars. Together with their rivals from the USA, Canada, Germany and Australia, the Russianmade SOL will cover about 3,000 miles across four states.
