Krasnodar, 26 January – Yug Times. Speaking in the talk show Time Will Show on the federal Channel One last week, Yan Ivanov, federal coordinator of the Sober Russia project, claimed that Russian winemakers accustom people to hard drinking. This remark brought the regional authorities, public activists and experts back to an old dispute whether wine drinking is useful or harmful. Kuban Governor Veniamin Kondratiev also responded Ivanov.
In his microblog, Mr. Kondratiev wrote: “Activist Yan Ivanov claims that winemakers allegedly make people drunkards. I would like to remind that wine is an agricultural product. I invite him to visit Kuban and see our leading wineries. Here he will be able to see for himself that wine is an important branch of agriculture, and also a food product which in moderate doses in useful rather than harmful for the human organism.”
Governor’s remark was not left without a reply, either. The Sober Russia activists stated that they cannot agree that alcohol could be called part of agriculture. “In 2017, Ministry for Public Health agreed with our position that there is no safe dose of alcohol whatsoever! We stand against simplification of the issue!”
Then local public activists and experts joined in. Say, Natalia Ageyeva and Tatiana Guguchkina, professors of the regional scientific centre for horticulture, viticulture and winemaking, gave a comprehensive answer that stated that wine is a food product with scientifically proven biological value.
As a matter of fact, it must be concluded that wine is a product of dual nature: it is both an agricultural product, but also an alcohol drink that should not be abused.
