The year was rich in loud news, and Kuban often acted as the venue of development vectors of national significance — numerous summits, conferences and forums held at the background of positive changes in the region’s social and economic sector. And we have a lot to be proud of.

FORUM OF THE YEAR

The Russian Investment Forum, one of the country’s main economic and political events, closed on 28 February in Sochi. For the first time, it was held in February, changing autumn for winter, however this fact did not affect its quality — quite the contrary: the total amount of the agreements concluded over the two days of the forum was about 200 billion rubles. According to Russia’s Vice Prime Minister Dmitri Kozak, the forum summoned about 600 companies, including 80 from abroad.

The delegation of the Krasnodar region signed 200 protocols and agreements for the total amount of 140 billion rubles.

VISIT OF THE YEAR

Russian President Vladimir Putin was on a working visit in Krasnodar on 23 May. The agenda included visiting of the FC Krasnodar Academy and super-modern new stadium. Mr. Putin inspected these objects together with Vice Prime Minister Vitali Mutko, Governor Veniamin Kondratiev, and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who was very enthusiastic over what he saw in Krasnodar.

CALL OF THE YEAR

On 15 June, President Putin held a traditional telephone line with Russian citizens. One of the major complaints voiced during the telephone conference was bad quality of the roads in many Russian regions. Following a call from Krasnodar, all road building and communal services in the city were put on alert.

Putin’s interference gave the required impetus to all works. Their financial backing amounted to 2 billion rubles in 2017 (a half of the money coming from the federal budget, 900 million from the regional budget, and 100 million from the municipal budget). The plan for 2018 operates with similar sums. Presently, Mayor’s Office closely inspects the progress of the works. It is planned that as much as 47% of the city’s roads will have been repaired by the end of this year.

CONFERENCE OF THE YEAR

On 28 June, Krasnodar hosted the 14th Conference of Russian and German partner cities, attended by 600 delegates, including foreign ministers, regional officials and public activists from the both countries. The agenda of the event included intermunicipal cooperation, exchange of experience in housing and communal services, architecture and construction, culture, education, tourism, and public contracts.

Opening the conference, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said: “The mutual interest between Russia and Germany rests on pragmatic ideas. In this respect, the conference in Krasnodar goes far beyond the framework of an event between regional leaders. I am confident that it is a good example of marshaling mutual relations at any, be it even very difficult, stage of the international situation.”

ELECTION OF THE YEAR

On 10 September, Kuban voters elected the deputies of the regional Legislative Assembly. The number of seats on the new parliament is less — 70 vs. 100 in the previous convocation. Most of the votes were given to United Russia Party. The other parties that got seats in the parliament were the Communists, Liberal Democrats, and Growth Party. According to the Central Electoral Commission, the appearance was 42%. The election was acknowledged legitimate.

ROTATION OF THE YEAR

It was a mass event, caused by the election to the regional Legislative Assembly. Several ex deputy governors became regional MPs, including Sergei Altukhov, responsible for industrial issues and investments. According to federal experts, this rotation would help create a mighty legislative body, able to work in tandem with the executive power and let them improve the efficiency of the regional policy.

The municipalities also became exposed to a reshuffling wave — about a dozen of them received new leaders.

INITIATIVE OF THE YEAR

On 4 October, Krasnodar played host to a conference of leaders of the special services, security and law enforcement structures from 74 countries of the world. FSB Director Aleksandr Bortnikov announced that Russia stands for a complex approach to counteract terrorism, and voiced President Putin’s position, lying in the rejection of double standards policy when fighting terrorism.

HARVEST OF THE YEAR

Most agricultural companies in the region have worked excellently during the past agricultural season — the yield of nearly all cultures equaled or was a little higher than the previous year.

The gross yield of cereals and leguminous plants amounted to 14.3 million tons (100.1% to the 2016 figure), including wheat — 8.7 million tons (102.4%), barley - 952,000 tons (103.5%), maize — 3.45 million tons (96.7%), sunflower — 1.07 million tons (100.5%), sugar beets — 9.91 million tons (99.3%), and vegetables — 866,000 tons (99.3%). The amount of rice harvested, 730,000 tons, was only 89.6% of the last year’s figure, but it was not a disaster, because the 2016 was a record harvest for the rice-growers.

SCANDAL OF THE YEAR

In this nomination, the priority is undoubtedly given to the doping issues.

Now the jitters with admittance of Russian athletes to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro look a mere trifle. The real bomb exploded now - before the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. Regretfully, the two-time Olympic champion bobsleder Aleksei Voevoda found himself in the centre of the scandal: the IOC disqualified him for life allegedly for the violation of the anti-doping rules.

Vice Prime Minister Vitali Mutko, responsible for the sports, and leaders of the Russian National Olympic Committee announced that the doping scandal is being orchestrated by our ill-wishers.
