The Yug Times correspondent has met with parents of little autists to learn about the life of such families.
For many people, autism is something strange and frightful. The experience of the families with autist children that live in Krasnodar proves that not even all medical professionals are fully aware of this state or able to reveal it in time.
Sometimes they are referred to as ‘extraterrestrials’: some of them may know three languages at the age of five, others may do most complicated mathematic sums. It is believed that such children may turn into excellent IT professionals and mathematicians, but in Russia many of them when becoming of age would be facing only one sad diagnosis: schizophrenia. Recalling the early childhood of her daughter Aliona, Anna Lukianova said: “At the age of eighteen months we raised an alarm over her behaviour, for she did not play with her toys or might not answer to her name.” During the two and a half years that followed, the parents tried all kinds of drug treatment, lessons with a psychologist and speech therapist, and even acupuncture. It seemed that nothing could help - until they heard of Dr. Alfred Tomatis’ method, based on sound sensory integration stimulation with the help of special earphones. Just a few days after she began taking lessons, Aliona started to repeat the words - and it was a real breakthrough for an autist person like her.
“It may look that my 11-year-old son doesn’t differ from all other kinds,” says Yevgenia Smirnova, a housewife from Krasnodar. “Only when you start talking to him, you would understand that he has the world of his own, which regretfully fails to comply with the common standards.” She recalls that her son was growing normally until the age of two, when after the scheduled inoculations she saw peculiarities in his behaviour. “The son began to be afraid of a vacuum-cleaner, to which he had never paid any attention before. Then I Google-d ‘fright of loud sounds’ and learned about autism for the first time.” Currently her son as well as many other autist children studies externally, at home. According to statistics, one in every 60 children is born an autist. This figures tells unambiguously that our medical and welfare structures should get more actively involved in the work with such families. They really need a specific governmental support.
